Proteins, Carbohydrates, Lipids

We have been looking at four macromolecules: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids over the past few weeks. This week, we will look at three of the macromolecules, which is proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. These three molecules are present in our everyday diet, and they have numerous uses in the body.

Proteins

Proteins

Proteins are contained in food that people commonly eat. They are in eggs, cheese, salmon, tofu, etc. Once in the human body, they build and repair tissues. We use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and body chemicals. Proteins also compose bones, skin, blood, cartilage, and muscles.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are contained in candy, pizza, cereal, rice, potato, corn, etc. Carbohydrates provide the energy needed for physical activity and brain function to the body. Carbohydrates are also important for the health of the intestines and organs. In fact, they are closely related to waste elimination.

Lipids

Lipids

Lipids are contained in cheese, butter, nuts, seeds, chocolate, avocado, etc. They play various roles in the body from providing energy to producing hormones. They are also used to protect our bodies, as there is a layer of fat below our skin. Also, organs such as the kidneys have a layer of fat around them for protection from injuries. Lipids are essential for digestion and absorption of food as well.
